Birdwatching is about slowing down and embracing the unexpected. Like a safari, it’s quiet, patient, and full of surprises — from rare migrants to subtle behaviours, or simply the beauty of stillness. Nature sets the pace, and sometimes the experience takes longer than planned (planned for 4 to 5 hours) — but that’s what makes each outing unique.
These seasonal wetlands in Faial are a key stopover for migratory birds like ducks and herons. From September to April, when the ponds hold water, it’s one of the island’s best birdwatching spots. In summer, they dry up — a reminder of nature’s delicate balance and constant change.
