FAIAL CALDEIRA PERIMETER

Hiking in the heart of a sleeping volcano

At the top of Faial Island lies one of nature’s most breathtaking secrets: the majestic Caldeira. This circular trail, around 7 km long (about 2.5 hours of walking), follows the rim of an ancient volcano and is rated as moderate difficulty. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by lush mosses, endemic birds, and sweeping views over the Atlantic Ocean and neighboring islands. Here, we hike literally in the clouds… or even above them.

LEVADAS TRAIL FAIAL ISLAND

A waterline, an enchanted forest, and a silence broken only by the sounds of nature. The Levada Trail in Faial is a journey of quiet wonder — a 7.5 km route, easy difficulty, completed in 2h30 to 3h, through tunnels, bridges, and shaded paths under Japanese cedar trees.

We follow the course of an old water channel built in the mid-20th century. Today, it’s more than an engineering landmark — it’s a living corridor of biodiversity. Along the way, you’ll find native plant species, shy island birds, and the deep, green pulse of Faial’s interior.

Stretching between Monte Queimado and Monte da Guia, this short trail is full of big surprises. Just 3.5 km long, it’s perfect for discovering the essence of Faial without leaving the city of Horta. In about 1h30, we cross coastal landscapes, protected nature zones, dramatic viewpoints, and living pieces of island history.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning views over Porto Pim Bay, Horta city, the Caldeirinhas crater, and the islands of Pico and São Jorge. The trail takes us through fascinating volcanic formations and reveals stories of whalers, old fortresses, and the legacy of foreign families like the Dabneys.

At the end, you can dip into the turquoise waters of Porto Pim beach — ideal for snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, or just enjoying a drink or meal at one of the cafés by the sea. It’s the perfect place to watch the sun set behind Monte da Guia.

Guided by a marine biologist and certified mountain guide, we go beyond the surface — with stops for environmental interpretation, seabird spotting, and photography. Because even the most accessible trail can reveal the extraordinary, when seen with curious eyes.
